Welcome to Cowboy Action Shooting. Born in the deserts of
southern California and Arizona, it is the fastest growing
sport in America today.
These
modern-era gunfighters recreate every aspect of frontier
life, adopting names, guns and the attire from the 1870's.
Costuming and aliases are a big part of CAS. There's no
rhyme or reason to selecting your alias, geographic reference
or a favorite movie character.
There's
no limit on how simple or elaborate apparel can be. Some
start with sand colored shirts and jeans with cowboy boots.
The longer they're in it, the more they develop a persona
and start adding things, maybe a special knife or hat.
This
is still competition shooting, but less stressful and more
relaxed than any other kind of competition. This is also
a very FAMILY FRIENDLY sport. Women and kids compete, too.
We've got shooters all across the board professors, teachers,
carpenters, businessmen, retirees, and law officers.
Each
shooter's basic rig requires two single action revolvers,
one lever action rifle, and one shotgun. The main competition
is called the main stages. A stage may involve any combination
of guns. The imagination that goes into setting stages brings
you into the old west setting. There's always a story line
for the day. You might be in jail and have to unlock yourself
using a broom to get the keys- then get your guns and start
shooting.
Safety
is a huge consideration. Hearing and eye protection is required,
and any unsafe action may have the shooter disqualified
on the spot. Besides the main stages there are also side
matches and team shoots.
There's
more to this fun and exciting sport than one can tell in
this space. CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF.
